Perhaps the most amazing story of the sparrows’ pursuit of man comes from the coal miners who used to bring coal up from below the Yorkshire landscape.

Astonishingly, those hewers of “black gold” were joined, 700 feet below the surface by little colonies of house sparrows, begging no doubt for whatever crumbs of comfort were on offer from sundry lunch boxes!

Pioneering

Another pioneering group of these little birds hitched a lift on the whalers patrolling the South Atlantic in order to colonise the Falkland Islands – presumably right under the noses of the Argentineans!

Yet at this moment in time, all is not apparently well with sparrows. It is thought for instance, that house sparrow numbers in Britain have been virtually halved during the past 20 years.

This one time never absent garden bird of my youth is not nowadays it seems, as omnipresent as once it was! I have heard suggestions that modern urban buildings do not offer the kind of nesting opportunities that for instance, ensured that the eaves of the house in which I was born and raised, were packed each and every summer with house sparrow homes.
