Birds: entertaining backyard friends

With each change of season, it is so exciting to see what fine-feathered friends will come to my backyard. In the winter, there are the seed feeders, suet feeders, and berry-laden shrubs and trees for new arrivals coming to feed. In the summer, birdbaths and hummingbird feeders are added to invite the visitors to stop in and enjoy. One of the rewards of watching birds at my feeders is the sense of connection to nature and creation.

Dyer County is fortunate to lie along the Mississippi River flyway so many species of birds can be seen right in our own area and perhaps backyard. Sixty percent of all bird species in the United States migrate annually through this corridor. At different times of the year, there are cardinals (redbirds), nut hatches, dark-eyed juncos (snowbirds), chickadees, goldfinches, woodpeckers, blue jays, blue birds, indigo buntings, Eastern towhees, doves, robins, mockingbirds, brown thrashers, catbirds, thrushes, titmice, ruby-crested kinglets, cedar waxwings, and
