Participation is key to Great Backyard Bird Count's success
More Information
1, 2, 3 Count
The Great Backyard Bird Count, Feb. 17-20, is led by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, National Audubon Society and Bird Studies Canada. It is free to participate.
Who: People of all birding skill levels can participate, including school and college classes and neighborhood groups.
Where: Your count can take place in any location, from backyards and parks to schoolyards, arboretums and nature centers.
How it works: Tally birds for at least 15 minutes for one or even all four days of the count. Go to different places on different days if you so choose. Keep separate tally sheets or checklists for each day. Keep a tally of the largest number of individuals of each species that you observe showing up together at one time - for instance, the largest number at any one time of blue jays or Carolina chickadees. Enter data at www.birdcount.org under the heading, "Submit Your Checklists!"
Details: Instructions, information about the photo contest, and help for educators can be found at www.birdcount.org . Click on "How to Participate."
